Overview

Experience the highlights of Tanzania’s legendary Northern Safari Circuit on this private 5-day, 4-night lodge safari. Beginning in Arusha, the journey takes you through the wildlife-rich landscapes of Tarangire National Park, across the vast plains of Serengeti National Park, and into the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater.

Your safari begins with game viewing in Tarangire, a park renowned for its beautiful landscapes, abundant wildlife and impressive baobab trees. From there, continue to the Serengeti for two nights and extensive game drives across one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife destinations. A full day in the Serengeti provides plenty of time to explore its open plains and search for lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and other wildlife.

The journey then continues to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where you will stay near the crater before an early morning descent onto the Ngorongoro Crater floor. Surrounded by the dramatic walls of this ancient volcanic caldera, you will enjoy a final game drive and picnic lunch before returning to Arusha or transferring to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight. Travelling privately in a safari Land Cruiser with a professional English-speaking driver-guide allows for a comfortable and flexible safari experience, with accommodation, meals, park fees and scheduled game drives included throughout the journey.

Safari Itinerary

After breakfast, your private safari adventure begins at approximately 8:00 AM as you leave Arusha and travel towards Tarangire National Park.

Tarangire offers a wonderful introduction to Tanzania’s wildlife, with varied landscapes of open savannah, seasonal wetlands and distinctive baobab trees. The park is particularly famous for its elephants, while giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes and numerous other species can also be encountered during your game drive. Predators such as lions may also be spotted as you explore with your private driver-guide.

A picnic lunch will be served during the day, allowing you to make the most of your time inside the park.

In the afternoon, leave Tarangire and continue to the Karatu area, where you can relax after your first day on safari and enjoy dinner at the lodge.

Accommodation

Farm of Dreams

After breakfast, set out for one of the great highlights of your journey: Serengeti National Park.

The drive towards the Serengeti takes you through the spectacular landscapes of northern Tanzania before reaching the park’s famous plains. As you enter the Serengeti, the journey becomes part of the safari, with opportunities to begin spotting wildlife along the way.

Enjoy a game drive across this remarkable ecosystem, searching for the animals that have made the Serengeti one of Africa’s most celebrated safari destinations. Depending on the area and season, you may encounter large herds of plains game as well as elephants, giraffes, buffalo and predators including lions, cheetahs and leopards.

A picnic lunch will be served during the day before you continue exploring the park.

Later in the afternoon, make your way to camp for a relaxing evening surrounded by the atmosphere of the Serengeti.

Today is dedicated entirely to exploring the Serengeti National Park, giving you the freedom to venture deeper into its vast wilderness.

Morning and afternoon game drives provide excellent opportunities to observe the Serengeti at different times of day. Your driver-guide will use local knowledge and recent wildlife movements to seek out rewarding sightings while allowing time to enjoy the landscape rather than simply rushing from one sighting to another.

The Serengeti supports an extraordinary variety of wildlife, from large herds of wildebeest and zebra to elephants, buffalo, giraffes and numerous antelope species. It is also one of Africa’s great predator habitats, offering opportunities to search for lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas.

Depending on the season and the location of the herds, you may also have the opportunity to witness some of the wildlife movements associated with the Great Migration.

After a rewarding day in the bush, return to your tented camp for dinner and another night in the Serengeti.

Enjoy breakfast at camp before setting out on your final game drive through the Serengeti.

The morning provides another opportunity to search for wildlife and perhaps encounter species or behaviours you have not yet seen. With no two game drives ever quite the same, even your departure from the Serengeti remains part of the safari experience.

After lunch, leave the Serengeti behind and travel towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where the scenery gradually changes as you approach the highlands surrounding the famous Ngorongoro Crater.

Arrive at your accommodation later in the day and settle in for dinner and a relaxing evening. Tomorrow brings an early start and one of the most anticipated experiences of the safari: descending into the Ngorongoro Crater.

Accommodation

Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge or Embalakai Ngorongoro Tented Camp

After an early breakfast at approximately 6:00 AM, depart for the Ngorongoro Crater and descend to the crater floor for your final game drive.

The enormous volcanic caldera creates one of East Africa’s most distinctive wildlife environments. Its grasslands, wetlands and woodland habitats support a remarkable concentration of animals, making the crater an excellent location for a final morning of wildlife viewing.

During your game drive, look out for wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, elephants, hippos and numerous antelope species, while lions and other predators are also regularly encountered. The crater is additionally known as one of the places in northern Tanzania where visitors may be fortunate enough to see the endangered black rhinoceros, although sightings can never be guaranteed.

Enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by the dramatic scenery before ascending from the crater and beginning your journey back towards Arusha.

On arrival, you will be dropped off in Arusha or, depending on your onward travel arrangements, transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departing flight.

Your five-day safari comes to an end with memories of Tarangire’s elephants and baobabs, the seemingly endless Serengeti and the remarkable natural amphitheatre of Ngorongoro.
