Safari Summary
Overview
7 Days / 6 Nights | Machame Route | Mount Kilimanjaro | Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m Get ready for an unforgettable 7-day Mount Kilimanjaro trek via the Machame Route, one of Tanzania’s most spectacular and scenic routes to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. Often known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, challenging trails and excellent acclimatization profile. Over seven days, you will journey through lush rainforest, beautiful heath and moorland, dramatic alpine landscapes and the high-altitude Arctic Zone before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. From Rainforest to the Roof of Africa Your adventure begins at Machame Gate, where you meet your professional mountain guide and support crew before entering the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest. As you climb higher, the environment transforms dramatically: Rainforest → Heath & Moorland → Alpine Desert → Arctic Zone Every stage reveals a new landscape and a new challenge. You will pass through spectacular valleys, rocky ridges and high-altitude terrain while enjoying breathtaking views of Mount Meru, Kibo Peak and the surrounding Tanzanian landscape when weather conditions allow. A Route Designed for the Adventure The 7-day Machame itinerary gives you valuable time to acclimatize gradually while experiencing the mountain at a steady pace. Unlike the Marangu Route, Machame uses mountain tents, allowing you to sleep closer to nature and experience the unique atmosphere of camping on Kilimanjaro. Your experienced guide will monitor your pace and condition throughout the trek, encouraging the essential “pole pole” (slowly, slowly) approach that helps you adapt to the altitude.

Safari Itinerary
DAY 1: MACHAME GATE → MACHAME CAMP Distance: ~11 km Trekking Time: 5–7 hours Altitude: 1,800 m → 3,000 m Habitat: Rainforest Overnight: Machame Camp Meals: Lunch & Dinner Your Kilimanjaro Adventure Begins Your 7-day Mount Kilimanjaro trek begins at Machame Gate. After registration and meeting your professional mountain guide and support crew, you enter the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest. The trail gradually climbs beneath towering trees, dense vegetation and moss-covered forest. Listen for bird calls and watch for monkeys as you make your way deeper into the mountain. Your guide will maintain a comfortable pole pole (slowly, slowly) pace, allowing you to conserve energy and begin adapting to the increasing altitude. After several hours, arrive at Machame Camp, where your mountain crew will have prepared your tent. Enjoy dinner and rest beneath the forest canopy. Tonight, your journey toward Africa’s highest summit officially begins.

DAY 2: MACHAME CAMP → SHIRA CAMP Distance: ~9 km Trekking Time: 4–6 hours Altitude: 3,000 m → 3,845 m Habitat: Heath & Moorland Overnight: Shira Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner From Rainforest to Highland Moorland After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind and begin climbing through the heath and moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper and more open, with increasingly dramatic views of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic landscape. As you gain elevation, you may begin to see Kibo Peak rising above the clouds. Reach Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most impressive landscapes. The wide plateau offers beautiful views and a feeling of being completely surrounded by wilderness. Arrive at Shira Camp, enjoy your evening meal and rest. You are now deep into the mountain — and the Roof of Africa is getting closer.

DAY 3: SHIRA CAMP → LAVA TOWER → BARRANCO CAMP Distance: ~10 km Trekking Time: 6–8 hours Altitude: 3,845 m → 4,630 m → 3,960 m Habitat: Alpine Desert Overnight: Barranco Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Climb High, Sleep Low Today is one of the most important acclimatization days of your Kilimanjaro trek. After breakfast, begin climbing toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630 metres. The landscape changes dramatically as vegetation becomes increasingly sparse and volcanic rocks dominate the scenery. This is where the principle “climb high, sleep low” becomes important. After reaching Lava Tower, descend toward Barranco Valley. The descent allows your body to experience a higher altitude before sleeping lower at Barranco Camp. 🏔️ Barranco Valley Barranco Camp is surrounded by dramatic volcanic cliffs and towering mountain landscapes. The famous Barranco Wall rises above the camp, giving you a spectacular preview of tomorrow’s adventure. Enjoy dinner and rest while your guide and crew prepare you for the next stage. Today you climbed higher to prepare your body for the summit.

DAY 4: BARRANCO CAMP → KARANGA CAMP Distance: ~5 km Trekking Time: 4–5 hours Altitude: 3,960 m → 4,035 m Habitat: Alpine Desert Overnight: Karanga Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Conquer the Famous Barranco Wall Wake up early and prepare for one of the most exciting sections of the Machame Route. After breakfast, begin climbing the Barranco Wall. Although it looks intimidating from below, the trail is a manageable scramble for most trekkers when taken slowly and carefully. Your guide will assist you through the more challenging sections. At the top, enjoy spectacular views across the valleys and toward the summit. Continue through the alpine desert toward Karanga Camp. Because today is relatively short, you have valuable time to rest, hydrate and prepare for the higher elevations ahead. Overnight: Karanga Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner A Night Above the Clouds As evening arrives, enjoy the mountain scenery and, weather permitting, breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Tomorrow you move closer to the summit.

DAY 5: KARANGA CAMP → BARAFU CAMP Distance: ~4 km Trekking Time: 4–5 hours Altitude: 4,035 m → 4,640 m Habitat: Alpine Desert Overnight: Barafu Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner The Final Camp Before the Summit After breakfast, begin your short but steep trek toward Barafu Camp. The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the high-altitude alpine desert. Barafu means “ice” in Swahili, and the environment here reflects the extreme altitude and cold conditions. Upon reaching camp, your guide will brief you about the summit attempt. You will have an early dinner and prepare your clothing, headlamp, water and other summit equipment. Rest Before the Biggest Challenge Try to sleep early because you will wake during the night for your final ascent. At this point, the summit is no longer just a dream. Tomorrow, you climb to 5,895 metres.

DAY 6: BARAFU CAMP → UHURU PEAK → MWEKA CAMP Distance: ~17 km Trekking Time: 12–15+ hours Altitude: 4,640 m → 5,895 m → 3,080 m Habitat: Arctic Zone → Alpine Desert → Rainforest Overnight: Mweka Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner SUMMIT DAY — UHURU PEAK This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure. You will normally begin the summit attempt around midnight, depending on weather, trail conditions and your guide’s assessment. Under the stars, begin the slow climb toward Stella Point. The trail is steep and the air becomes thinner with every step. Your guide will encourage you to maintain a steady pole pole pace. Sunrise on Kilimanjaro As dawn approaches, the horizon begins to glow. You may witness one of the most spectacular sunrises in Africa from the upper slopes of Kilimanjaro. Continue along the crater rim toward the ultimate destination: UHURU PEAK — 5,895 METRES THE ROOF OF AFRICA Stand at the highest point in Tanzania and celebrate your achievement. Take photographs, embrace the moment and enjoy the incredible sense of accomplishment. You have conquered Kilimanjaro. The Descent After celebrating at Uhuru Peak, begin your descent. Return toward Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down toward Mweka Camp. The descent can be physically demanding after the summit, so your guide will maintain a controlled pace. Arrive at Mweka Camp, enjoy dinner and finally rest after one of the longest days of your life. Tonight, you sleep knowing you stood on the Roof of Africa.

Accommodation details are available on request for this part of the itinerary.

DAY 7: MWEKA CAMP → MWEKA GATE → MOSHI Distance: ~10 km Trekking Time: 3–4 hours Altitude: 3,080 m → 1,640 m Habitat: Rainforest Meals: Breakfast & Lunch The Final Descent After breakfast, begin your final descent through the beautiful Kilimanjaro rainforest. The air becomes warmer and the vegetation becomes greener as you lose altitude. Reach Mweka Gate, where you complete the official park procedures. After signing out, successful climbers receive their Kilimanjaro summit certificate. Your driver will meet you at the gate and transfer you to Moshi, Arusha, or another agreed destination.
