Overview
The 9-day Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit route with a Crater Camp overnight is the ultimate high-altitude trekking itinerary, offering near 360-degree views, exceptional acclimatization, and a rare sleeping experience inside the mountain's volcanic caldera. Starting from the western slopes via the Lemosho trail, you spend the first three days ascending through lush Afromontane rainforest and open moorland onto the expansive Shira Plateau. Diverging north into the remote and uncrowded alpine desert, days four through six wind clockwise around the Kibo massif passing Moir Hut, Pofu Camp, and Third Cave to push your altitude gradually toward the high base camp at School Hut. On day seven, you make the steep ascent up to the rim via Gilman's Point, standing on Uhuru Peak before descending a short distance to set up camp at Crater Camp (5,750m) beside the glaciated Furtwängler Glacier. After spending a freezing, star-filled night inside the caldera and exploring the Reusch Crater or Ash Pit the following morning, you begin a massive descent down to Mweka Camp on day eight before completing the final trek to Mweka Gate on day nine.
