Safari Summary
Overview
8 Days / 7 Nights | Lemosho Route | Mount Kilimanjaro | Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m Embark on an extraordinary 8-day Mount Kilimanjaro trek via the Lemosho Route, one of the most scenic and rewarding routes to the Roof of Africa. The Lemosho Route is renowned for its beautiful landscapes, quieter trails during the early stages, gradual ascent and excellent opportunities for acclimatization. Over eight days, you will journey from the remote western slopes of Kilimanjaro through lush rainforest, spectacular heath and moorland, high-altitude volcanic landscapes and finally the Arctic Zone surrounding the summit. From Wilderness to the Roof of Africa Your adventure begins on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, where the trail starts in a remote and beautiful wilderness environment. As you gain altitude, the scenery transforms dramatically: Rainforest → Heath & Moorland → Alpine Desert → Arctic Zone Along the way, you will experience spectacular valleys, volcanic formations, dramatic ridgelines and breathtaking views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding Tanzanian landscape. A Route Built for Acclimatization The 8-day Lemosho itinerary provides valuable time to adapt to the increasing altitude while maintaining a steady and manageable pace. The route follows the important principle of “climb high, sleep low,” particularly around Lava Tower and Barranco, helping your body gradually adjust to the mountain environment. Your professional mountain guide will monitor your pace, hydration, energy levels and overall condition throughout the trek. Pole pole — slowly, steadily, one step at a time. Authentic Mountain Camping Unlike the Marangu Route, Lemosho is a camping route. You will sleep in quality mountain tents at designated campsites while your dedicated support crew prepares meals and helps organize camp. Evenings on Kilimanjaro offer a unique opportunity to relax beneath the stars, surrounded by the silence and grandeur of the mountain. The Ultimate Goal — Uhuru Peak The defining moment of your journey comes during the summit attempt. From high camp, you will begin your final ascent during the early hours of the morning. Under the stars, you will climb toward Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak. At 5,895 metres above sea level, you will stand at the highest point in Tanzania and the highest summit in Africa. As the sun rises over the horizon, the mountains and clouds below create a spectacular scene that makes every difficult step worthwhile. The summit is not just a destination — it is the reward for every step you took to get there. Why Choose the 8-Day Lemosho Route? The 8-day Lemosho Route is an excellent choice for trekkers who want a scenic, gradual and well-paced Kilimanjaro experience. The additional trekking days allow more time for acclimatization compared with shorter itineraries, while the route offers some of Kilimanjaro’s most impressive landscapes. It is ideal for adventurous travelers who value: Scenic and varied landscapes Gradual altitude gain More time for acclimatization Professional mountain support A challenging but rewarding summit experience A quieter beginning to the trek An authentic wilderness adventure Your Kilimanjaro Achievement 8 Days. 5,895 Metres. One Legendary Summit.

DAY 1: LEMOSHO GATE → BIG TREE CAMP Distance: ~7 km Trekking Time: 3–4 hours Altitude: ~2,100 m → 2,780 m Habitat: Rainforest Overnight: Big Tree Camp Meals: Lunch & Dinner Your Kilimanjaro Adventure Begins Your journey to the Roof of Africa begins at Lemosho Gate. After registration and meeting your professional mountain guide and support crew, you begin your trek through the lush rainforest on the western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail is surrounded by towering trees, moss, dense vegetation and beautiful birdlife. If you're lucky, you may spot monkeys moving through the forest canopy. Today's trek is relatively short, allowing you to settle into the rhythm of the mountain. Arrive at Big Tree Camp, where your mountain crew will have prepared your campsite. Enjoy dinner and rest beneath the forest canopy. One mountain. One dream. Your journey has begun.

DAY 2: BIG TREE CAMP → SHIRA 1 CAMP Distance: ~8–9 km Trekking Time: 5–7 hours Altitude: ~2,780 m → 3,500 m Habitat: Rainforest → Heath & Moorland Overnight: Shira 1 Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner From Forest to the Shira Plateau After breakfast, leave the dense rainforest behind and climb toward the beautiful Shira Plateau. As you gain altitude, the vegetation changes dramatically. Tall forest gives way to open heath and moorland, revealing spectacular views across the surrounding landscape. The trail gradually becomes more rugged as you approach the highlands. On clear days, you may begin to see the magnificent Kibo Peak, the highest volcanic cone of Kilimanjaro. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp, settle into your tent and enjoy dinner. Spend the evening resting and allowing your body to begin adapting to the increasing altitude. The forest is behind you. The high mountain world is ahead.

DAY 3: SHIRA 1 CAMP → SHIRA 2 CAMP Distance: ~8 km Trekking Time: 4–5 hours Altitude: ~3,500 m → 3,850 m Habitat: Heath & Moorland Overnight: Shira 2 Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Explore the Spectacular Shira Plateau Today is a relatively moderate trekking day, giving you time to appreciate the spectacular scenery while continuing your gradual acclimatization. Walk across the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro's most beautiful high-altitude environments. The landscape is wide, open and dramatic, with volcanic formations and enormous views toward Kibo. Your guide will maintain a slow and comfortable pace while monitoring how you are adapting to the altitude. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp, where you will have lunch, relax and enjoy the mountain atmosphere. Depending on your energy and weather conditions, your guide may organize a short acclimatization walk around the camp. Enjoy dinner and prepare for the next stage of the journey. Today is about acclimatization, scenery and building strength for the summit.

DAY 4: SHIRA 2 CAMP → LAVA TOWER → BARRANCO CAMP Distance: ~10 km Trekking Time: 6–8 hours Altitude: 3,850 m → 4,630 m → 3,960 m Habitat: Alpine Desert Overnight: Barranco Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Climb High, Sleep Low Today is one of the most important acclimatization days on the 8-day Lemosho Route. After breakfast, begin climbing toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630 metres. As you ascend, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and barren. Vegetation becomes sparse and volcanic rocks dominate the scenery. At Lava Tower, you will have time to rest and enjoy lunch. Then comes the important descent toward Barranco Camp. This follows the proven acclimatization principle: Climb High. Sleep Low. Your body experiences the higher altitude during the day before descending to a lower elevation to sleep. Barranco Valley The approach to Barranco is spectacular. The enormous Barranco Wall rises dramatically above the valley, creating one of the most recognizable scenes on Kilimanjaro. Arrive at Barranco Camp and enjoy dinner while surrounded by dramatic volcanic cliffs. Today you climbed higher — tomorrow you climb stronger.

DAY 5: BARRANCO CAMP → KARANGA CAMP Distance: ~5 km Trekking Time: 4–5 hours Altitude: 3,960 m → 4,035 m Habitat: Alpine Desert Overnight: Karanga Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Conquer the Barranco Wall After breakfast, begin one of the most exciting sections of the Lemosho Route: the climb up the famous Barranco Wall. From below, the wall may appear intimidating, but your experienced guide will lead you carefully through the route. Some sections require simple scrambling using your hands for balance. Once you reach the top, enjoy breathtaking views across the valleys and toward the summit. Continue along the trail toward Karanga Camp. Today's shorter distance gives you valuable time to rest, hydrate and prepare for the higher elevations ahead. Arrive at camp, enjoy lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing. The summit is getting closer with every step.

DAY 6: KARANGA CAMP → BARAFU CAMP Distance: ~4 km Trekking Time: 4–5 hours Altitude: 4,035 m → 4,640 m Habitat: Alpine Desert Overnight: Barafu Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner The Final Camp Before Uhuru Peak After breakfast, begin your final daytime climb toward Barafu Camp. The trail becomes increasingly rocky and the vegetation almost disappears. You are now deep within Kilimanjaro's high-altitude environment. Arrive at Barafu Camp, located at approximately 4,640 metres. Your mountain crew will prepare your meal while your guide conducts a summit briefing. You will receive important instructions about: Summit clothing Hydration Trekking pace Headlamp preparation Altitude awareness Summit timing Emergency procedures Enjoy an early dinner and try to sleep as much as possible. You will wake during the night for the most important climb of your life. Tomorrow: Uhuru Peak. Tonight, you rest at the gateway to the Roof of Africa.

DAY 7: BARAFU CAMP → UHURU PEAK → MWEKA CAMP Distance: ~17 km Trekking Time: 12–15+ hours Altitude: 4,640 m → 5,895 m → 3,080 m Habitat: Arctic Zone → Alpine Desert → Rainforest Overnight: Mweka Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner SUMMIT DAY — CONQUER UHURU PEAK This is the day you have been preparing for. You will normally begin your summit attempt around midnight, depending on weather, trail conditions and your guide's assessment. Under the stars, begin the slow and steady climb toward Stella Point. The air is thin, temperatures are extremely cold and every step requires determination. Your guide will maintain a controlled pole pole pace while monitoring your condition. Sunrise on Kilimanjaro As the darkness begins to fade, the horizon slowly turns golden. If conditions allow, you may witness a spectacular sunrise from the upper slopes of Kilimanjaro. Continue along the crater rim toward your ultimate goal. UHURU PEAK — 5,895 METRES THE ROOF OF AFRICA You have made it. Stand at the highest point in Tanzania and the highest summit in Africa. Celebrate your achievement, take photographs and enjoy this extraordinary moment. You have climbed through forests, crossed volcanic landscapes, endured high altitude and pushed yourself beyond your comfort zone. You dreamed it. You climbed it. You conquered it. Descending the Mountain After celebrating at Uhuru Peak, begin your descent. Return toward Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down toward Mweka Camp. The descent is long, so your guide will maintain a safe and controlled pace. As you lose altitude, breathing becomes easier and the environment gradually changes. Arrive at Mweka Camp, enjoy dinner and rest. Tonight, sleep knowing that you stood on the Roof of Africa.

DAY 8: MWEKA CAMP → MWEKA GATE → MOSHI Distance: ~10 km Trekking Time: 3–4 hours Altitude: 3,080 m → 1,640 m Habitat: Rainforest Meals: Breakfast & Lunch The Final Descent After breakfast, begin your final trek through the beautiful Kilimanjaro rainforest. The trail descends steadily, with increasingly lush vegetation and warmer temperatures. After several hours, reach Mweka Gate, where you complete the official park procedures.
